Top-level managers
Typically consist of Board of Directors, President, Vice-President, Chief Executive Officers, General Manager (in hotel), Residence Manager (in hotel), etc. These individuals are mainly responsible for controlling and overseeing all the departments in the organization. They develop goals, strategic plans, and policies for the company, as well as make many decisions on the direction of the business. In addition, top-level managers play a significant role in the mobilization of outside resources and are for the most part responsible for the shareholders and general public.
General Manager especially in hotel has the main authority in every aspect of management, GM has responsibility to run the company or in this case hotel and make some decision based upon the situation that their meet upon.
According to Lawrence S. Kleiman, the following skills are needed at the top managerial level.
· Broadening their understanding of how factors such as competition, world economies, politics, and social trends influence the effectiveness of the organization.
Example of Case:
For example, in stock holder meeting, General Manager makes some planning ahead about the course of company or hotel and about what to do in the future plan. GM reports all the income and what have been done in the past for evaluation and planning ahead for future arrangement. After the planning section has been done, GM delegates his/her strategic plan to middle management section for future execution.
Middle-level managers
These personnel typically consist of branch managers, room director, marketing director and department managers, etc. These individuals are mainly responsible to the top management for the functioning of their department. They devote more time to organizational and directional functions. Their roles can be emphasized as executing plans of the organization in conformance with the company's policies and the objectives of the top management, they define and discuss information and policies from top management to lower management, and most importantly they inspire and provide guidance to lower level managers towards better performance. Some of their functions are as follows:
· Designing and implementing effective group and intergroup work and information systems.
· Defining and monitoring group-level performance indicators.
· Diagnosing and resolving problems within and among work groups.
· Designing and implementing reward systems that support cooperative behavior.
Example of Case:
For example, The GM has some planning about their new services to the customer and so he/she gave his/her strategic planning about services to the room director. Room director try to expand and develop the strategic plan and suit it to the customer needs. After it has been developed the room director delegates his/her authority to first line management part.
First-line managers
Typically consist of supervisors, section officers, foreman, etc. These individuals focus more on the controlling and direction of management functions. For instance, they assign tasks and jobs to employees, guide and supervise employees on day-to-day activities, look after the quantity and quality of the production of the company, make recommendations, suggestions, and communicate employee problems to the higher level above, etc. In this level, managers are the "image builders" of the company considering they are the only ones who have direct contact with employees.
· Basic supervision.
· Motivation.
· Career planning.
· Performance feedback.
Example of Case:
For example, the room director orders his/her first line manager such as housekeeping manager or front office manager to develop and execute the strategic planning like the GM order. But, the managers may freely to develop the strategic plan by what of their thinking best as long their use the GM planning as basic plan. Then after the job planning is done, the manager orders the supervisor to give the job to the employees or non-managerial part to be executed. The supervisors give the order and watch the worker to do their job right.
Non – Managerial
The non managerial also you may be able to call it as the main executor or the workers are the core of all strategic plans to be done. They are the larger part of the management, as they execute directly to the object of order. Even they are the larger part, they have only little authority. Even is like almost they don’t have any authority, they only do what they ordered to do without asking any question and can’t refuse their order.
But, even that they are the most important part of the management because without them the management system will not work.
Example of Case:
For example, the housekeeping manager that has been ordered by room director to increase the level of services and hospitality, order all of his/her worker in housekeeping department to do the job. The worker must give the customer much higher level of services and hospitality to satisfy their customer, the order come from the manager to supervisor and the supervisor must order the worker to do so, and the supervisor must watch how they work.
